CONGRATULATIONS

TO THE AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY ON THEIR TODAY'S ELECTION VICTORY

In the name of the millions of Cambodians who look up to Australia as a model of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region, I would like to present my warmest congratulations to the Labor Party, its leader, Anthony Albanese, and to all his colleagues for their victory in the federal elections of May 21.

I also present my sincere wishes for their success in their mission to build a stronger, more prosperous and more generous Australia which is more attentive to respect for global human rights and democratic principles.

I return to France this week after a trip of 10 days to Australia where I met elected representatives of the Australian people, all members of the Labor Party, who assured me of their support for the cause of democracy in Cambodia.

I am convinced that the new government led by the Labor Party will act more firmly to return Cambodia to the path of democracy, and will notably base its position on the clauses of the Paris Peace Agreements of 1991 which retain their full relevance.
