Thaksin Shinawatra arrives in Cambodia to take up new post

Thailand's government views Thaksin as a fugitive, and fears he will use Cambodia as a base to organize a campaign that will force new elections and eventually return him to power.

Thailand's chief prosecutor has said he would ask the foreign ministry to relay an arrest warrant for Thaksin, to authorities in Phnom Penh. But Cambodia has said it will not extradite Thaksin.

At a weekly cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Thai ministers agreed to scrap a memorandum of understanding for joint offshore development of energy reserves with Cambodia, in the Gulf of Thailand.

Secret oil deal between Hun Sen and Thaksin Shinawatra

In early 2006 Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen and Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra concluded a secret oil deal to personally share “under the table” a portion of royalties to be paid by oil exploitation companies. Those companies had been exploring very promising offshore oil and gas deposits in the Gulf of Thailand, including in the overlapping zones claimed by both Cambodia and Thailand.
