(*) LATEST INFORMATION ON POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN HEMOGLOBIN E, MALARIA AND COVID
As Sam Rainsy underlined in his article "Why are Southeast Asia, India and Africa relatively spared by COVID-19?" which appeared on May 18 in The Geopolitics, numerous epidemiologists have noticed that countries and regions infected by malaria are resisting the COVID-19 pandemic relatively well. This suggests that the populations of these countries and regions where malaria is endemic have developed a form of immunity to COVID-19.
Shared points between the two illnesses are increasingly being discovered. Recently, we have learned of the existence of a RNA virus which infects the parasite responsible for malaria and which, through its genetic sequence, presents striking resemblances with the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 named SARS-CoV-2.
This malaria virus, called MaRNAV-1, infects the Plasmodium vivax, a strain of parasite responsible for malaria. It gives protection against very serious illnesses and inflammations which can lead to the deadly cytokine storms found in malaria as well as in COVID-19.
Given the possible pathological link between malaria and COVID-19, it’s worth asking whether Hemoglobin E, which protects the populations of Southeast Asia and Northeast India against the worst kinds of malaria, is also protecting them against the most severe forms of COVID-19. This would explain the very low number of COVID-19 deaths in these regions.
“Your views seem very logical and it opens a new perspective about malaria and its association with COVID-19 infections,” Dr Sumit Rathore at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Department of Biotechnology wrote to Sam Rainsy after reading his article "Why Are Southeast Asia, India and Africa Relatively Spared by COVID-19?" published on May 18 in The Geopolitics https://thegeopolitics.com/why-are-southeast-asia-india-an…/
Dr Rathore went on, "Your argument about involvement of Hemoglobin E seems very interesting (…). The role of HbE in COVID is something which is required to be assessed as it seems it can influence the immune response towards a pathogen, as has been shown in the case of malaria.”
